Don't Say the Q Word - Funny Nurse Shirt

$29.99

3:40 a.m. in the ER. Two beds open, a fresh pot of coffee, and a new resident leans on the counter and says it out loud. Within the hour there are three ambulances, a man who swallowed his car keys and a printer jam. Nurses, EMTs, servers, retail closers and dispatchers all work under the same rule: you can think it, you can feel it, you never say it. Spelled out once, for the record: quiet. Nobody reading this is on shift. A funny nurse shirt and a gag gift from the coworker who said it. Everyone looked at the clock.

THE FINE PRINT

DON’T YOU DARE arches over a red prohibition sign and SAY THE Q WORD arches under it, in rounded white capitals. Inside the sign a big white Q sits behind the red slash, which crosses the front of the letter. A small sign-off runs along the bottom. White and red ink, cracked and speckled.

ASKING FOR A FRIEND

What is the q word in nursing?

It is quiet. Nurses, ER staff and EMTs treat saying 'it's quiet' on shift as a jinx that brings the next rush, so the word gets spelled, mimed or swapped for 'the q word'. It is a superstition, not a written rule. Nobody on a night shift is willing to test it.

Why should you never say quiet in a hospital?

Because hospital staff believe it jinxes the shift: say it out loud and the waiting room fills, the ambulances line up and every call light goes on at once. It is superstition, held as firmly as any policy on the unit. Whoever says it gets blamed for everything until morning.

Is the ER busier on a full moon?

Studies that have compared emergency room visits with the lunar cycle have mostly found no real difference, but plenty of ER staff swear by it anyway. The full moon takes the blame for the strange nights. The other suspect is whoever said the word at the start of the shift.
