Reply-All Is Not a Democracy - Funny Work Shirt

$29.99

Monday, 9:12 a.m. Someone in Facilities sends a parking update to the all-company list. By 9:14 there are forty replies asking to be removed, each one sent to all 2,300 people, plus three asking everyone to stop replying all, also sent to all 2,300 people. By 9:20 a man in Accounting has replied 'Thanks' to everyone. Nobody voted on any of this. A funny office shirt for anyone who has watched an inbox fill up with requests to be removed from the inbox. The parking update is still unread.

THE FINE PRINT

REPLY-ALL, IS NOT A and DEMOCRACY stacked as three full-width blocks of extra-heavy condensed capitals, with the small sign-off line underneath. Type only, in one bone-colored ink with a light cracked distress.

ASKING FOR A FRIEND

What is a reply all storm?

It is what happens when a message goes to a huge mailing list and people answer with reply-all, usually to ask to be removed, so every answer lands in every inbox and sets off more answers. Big ones have slowed company email to a crawl, and Microsoft 365 now has a feature called reply-all storm protection. The first message asking everyone to stop is always sent to everyone.

How to remove yourself from an email chain?

Outlook has an Ignore option that sends the conversation and every later message in it to Deleted Items, Gmail has Mute, and for a mailing list the reliable fix is a private note to whoever owns it. Asking the whole list to remove you puts you back in the conversation forty more times.

What is the difference between cc and bcc?

Cc (carbon copy) recipients can see each other; bcc (blind carbon copy) recipients are hidden from everyone else on the message. Put a big list in bcc and a reply-all from any of them goes back to the sender, not to the whole company. Put it in cc and the polls open.
