I’m Redshirting This Semester - College Student Shirt
College athletes sit out a season, keep practicing, and call it saving a year of eligibility. This version keeps the sitting out and skips the practicing. There is no roster, no scholarship and no film session, just nine credit hours, an alarm set for 10:40 and a parent on the phone asking what the plan is. The plan is development. A funny college shirt for the student who dropped two classes the day before the refund deadline and has called it strategic ever since. It also fits an actual redshirt freshman, who has heard this joke from every cousin at Thanksgiving and still has to be at the stadium stairs by 6 a.m.
THE FINE PRINT
I’M REDSHIRTING runs in a wide varsity arch, and THIS SEMESTER sits straight and much smaller beneath it. Block capitals, each ringed by a thin outline with a sliver of shirt showing between, cracked and speckled throughout. The only ink is red, naturally.

What does redshirting mean in sports?
A redshirt athlete practices with the team but sits out a season of games, so that season does not count against their eligibility and they can compete for an extra year later. Coaches use it for injuries, crowded positions and players who need a year to grow. Students outside the athletic department have started using it for a lighter semester, with less paperwork.
Is it okay to take a semester off?
Yes. Most colleges let students take a leave of absence for a term, and many come back on schedule. Check three things first: whether a scholarship or financial aid needs continuous enrollment, when a student loan grace period would start, and how re-enrollment works at your school. Calling it a redshirt year does not change any of the forms.
What is a gap year?
A gap year is a planned year away from school, usually between high school and college, spent working, traveling, volunteering or saving money. Many colleges let admitted students defer for one. A single semester off in the middle of college is the smaller version, and it comes with fewer travel photos.
