Been There Left Early - Funny Irish Exit Introvert Shirt

$29.99

I showed up on time. I said hello to the host, complimented the dip and found the coats piled on the bed in the back room. By 9:40 I was in the car, and by 10:05 I was home in sweatpants while the group chat asked who wanted another round. A proper goodbye at a party takes forty minutes and four separate conversations by the door. I skip all four. A funny drinking shirt for the Irish exit artist who does the rounds, eats the snacks and is gone before the second pitcher lands. Two people texted 'where'd you go' at midnight. Nobody saw me leave.

THE FINE PRINT

BEEN THERE runs across the top in big, bold condensed serif capitals, and LEFT EARLY sits smaller and centered underneath. One off-white ink, cracked and speckled through every letter like an old poster. No comma, no period, no picture: two rows of type that read like a newspaper headline.

ASKING FOR A FRIEND

What is an Irish exit?

It means leaving a party or a bar without saying goodbye to anyone, the host included. The English call the same move a French exit, and the French call it leaving the English way. Done well, it takes under a minute, and nobody notices the empty chair until the next round.

Is it rude to leave a party early?

Usually not, as long as you showed up, said hello to the host and did not walk out in the middle of the toast. A short thank-you on the way out covers it at most casual get-togethers. Skipping the thank-you as well is a separate skill, and a quieter one.

Where does been there done that come from?

It became common slang in the 1980s and 1990s, a flat way to say you have already done something and are not impressed by it. A longer version later added 'got the T-shirt' to the end. Some people were there and never made it as far as the done-that part.
