The invitation said 'just a few of us.' I counted thirty-one cars on the street and a man in the kitchen explaining his sourdough starter to anyone who stood still. I found the dog, the chip bowl and the quiet corner by the bookshelf, in that order, and stayed there for two hours. A funny introvert shirt for the guest who RSVP'd on a technicality and spends the whole party on the floor with the host's dog. Somebody asked what I do for work three separate times. Same person.
THE FINE PRINT
I WAS TOLD arches across the top in heavy collegiate block capitals, THERE WOULD BE leans underneath in a small hand-lettered brush script, and NO PEOPLE runs straight and wide along the bottom in the same heavy block letters. One near-black ink, speckled and cracked all over, with no punctuation anywhere.

ASKING FOR A FRIEND
Why do introverts hate parties?
Most do not hate them. Big, loud gatherings simply wear introverts out faster than they wear out extroverts, and small talk with strangers is the most tiring part. Plenty of introverts enjoy a dinner for four close friends and dread a party of forty acquaintances. The trouble starts when 'a few of us' turns out to mean forty.
Is it normal to not like people?
Yes, within reason. Plenty of people prefer company in small doses, a few close friends and a lot of quiet, and that is temperament, not a disorder. If disliking everyone comes with poor sleep, a low mood or no interest in anything, it is worth a talk with a doctor. Wanting to leave before the host's cousin starts the karaoke is just taste.
Why do I dislike everyone so much?
Usually it is exhaustion, not hatred. Too many people, too little sleep and too few hours alone can make everyone feel like a chore, and stress turns other people's noise up. A quiet weekend often fixes more than expected. Some evenings the honest answer is that the guest list was twice as long as promised.
