Take the high road, by all means. Then quietly circle back at 9 p.m. to reread the group chat. The borrowed casserole dish, returned unwashed. The 'per my last email' with the manager copied. The birthday text sent at 11:58 p.m., on purpose. Moral superiority takes years of practice; pettiness only needs a long memory and the patience to wait. A funny petty shirt for anyone who forgives, technically, and keeps the screenshots anyway.

THE FINE PRINT

PETTIER in large white blackletter capitals, with a small halo floating above the P. THAN THOU sits underneath in smaller blackletter. One white ink, cracked and specked all over.

ASKING FOR A FRIEND

What does holier than thou mean?

It describes someone who acts morally superior to everyone around them. The phrase comes from the Bible, Isaiah 65:5 in the King James Version: 'come not near to me; for I am holier than thou.' Swap the virtue for a grudge and the attitude survives completely intact.

Is being petty a sin?

Not by name. No verse mentions pettiness, but the Bible covers the parts: Leviticus 19:18 says not to bear a grudge, and 1 Corinthians 13:5 says love keeps no record of wrongs. Most people file pettiness under bad manners rather than damnation, then keep the record anyway.

Why do people hold grudges over small things?

Usually because the small thing was not small to them: it touched pride, fairness or the feeling of being ignored, and replaying it gives a sense of control. A grudge also takes less effort than the conversation that would end it. The truly petty just keep better notes.
