May Contain Lead - Funny Gen X Shirts
- Vendor
- WitMonger - Printed & Shipped From USA
Childhood in the 1970s ran on leaded gasoline, lead paint on the windowsills and a garden hose that tasted like a penny. Nobody wore a seat belt in the way-back of the station wagon, and the dashboard cigarette lighter was a dare. The whole generation came out of it fine, mostly: a short fuse, total recall for every commercial jingle of 1984, and no idea where the car keys went. A funny Gen X shirt for anyone who has quietly blamed a bad decision on the gas station.
THE FINE PRINT
A warning label with rounded corners. GEN X is knocked out of a dark brown bar across the top. Below it a yellow warning triangle holds a gas pump nozzle and hose, one drop falling from the spout. MANUFACTURED 1965-1980 runs in small spaced capitals, and MAY CONTAIN LEAD fills the bottom panel. Distressed throughout.

When was leaded gasoline banned in the US?
For road vehicles, on January 1, 1996, under the 1990 amendments to the Clean Air Act. The phase-out started in the 1970s, when new cars with catalytic converters needed unleaded fuel, and lead in gasoline was cut by about 90 percent by 1986. Plenty of Gen X road trips ran on the old formula.
What years were Gen X born?
Most definitions, including Pew Research Center's, put Gen X births from 1965 to 1980, between the baby boomers and the millennials; some sources start a year or two earlier. Those years line up almost exactly with the peak of leaded gasoline, which nobody mentioned at the time.
What does may contain mean on a food label?
It is a precautionary warning: the allergen is not an ingredient, but the food was made on shared equipment or in a shared facility, so traces are possible. In the US the wording is voluntary and not set by law. Applied to a generation raised downwind of the gas station, it is less a precaution than a disclosure.
