Every birder keeps a list. Mine has the same two crows on it, every morning since March, on the roof of the bakery. They watch the dumpster. They watch the man who empties it. Lately they watch me. Two is not enough to make it official, and nobody new has joined all spring. A crow shirt for bird watchers, corvid fans and anyone who has been followed down the block by a bird that clearly remembered them. Today's entry, 7:42 in the morning: still two. Still watching.

THE FINE PRINT

A field-guide plate in one off-white ink. Two crows, engraved in fine hatched lines, perch side by side on one thin wire inside a worn double-ruled frame, four feet gripping the wire. Below the frame, CORVUS BRACHYRHYNCHOS in spaced italic capitals, then FIG 2: ATTEMPTED MURDER in heavy worn serif capitals.

ASKING FOR A FRIEND

Why is it called a murder of crows?

The phrase comes from the fifteenth-century terms of venery, fanciful English names for groups of animals collected in books like the Book of St Albans, helped along by old folklore that tied crows to death. No rule sets how many crows it takes. Two crows who keep turning up together are, at best, still working on it.

Do ravens hold grudges?

As far as researchers can tell, yes. Ravens remember other ravens for years and remember people who treated them unfairly, and University of Washington studies showed crows recognizing and scolding a face that once trapped them, then teaching other crows to scold it too. Two of them watching from the same roof every morning is not a coincidence.

What is the scientific name for birds?

Birds as a whole are the class Aves. The American crow, the one working the parking lot on garbage day, is Corvus brachyrhynchos, Latin and Greek for short-beaked raven. Field guides list it with a straight face. Nobody who has watched one open a trash bag does.
