Exempt from Mandatory Fun - Work Humor Tee

$29.99

I have reviewed the calendar invite for Fun Friday and marked it declined, with no reason given. The trust fall, the escape room and the bowling night with assigned lanes have all been noted. I support the culture committee's work the way I support most things, from a distance. My contribution to morale is staying at my desk until 4:58 and not mentioning it. HR has the paperwork. A funny work shirt for the coworker who skips team building on principle, worn to the potluck, standing near the door, holding one deviled egg.

THE FINE PRINT

EXEMPT arched across the top in large, heavy slab-serif varsity capitals, with FROM MANDATORY FUN set straight underneath in smaller capitals of the same face. One white ink, with a cracked vintage distress through every letter.

ASKING FOR A FRIEND

Is team building mandatory?

Often, yes. In the US an employer can usually require attendance at a team-building event as part of the job, and for hourly workers a required event counts as paid work time under federal wage rules. Voluntary after-hours socials are different: skipping them is generally allowed, though somebody will notice. Most people manage it quietly, one polite decline at a time.

How to politely decline a work event?

Reply early, thank the organizer, and keep the reason short: a prior commitment is enough, and nobody is owed the details. Offering something small instead, like signing the card or joining the next lunch, makes it read as a scheduling problem rather than a verdict. A one-line reply sent the same day beats a long apology sent the morning of the event.

What does exempt mean in employment?

An exempt employee is paid a salary and meets federal tests for executive, administrative, professional or similar duties, so the overtime rules of the Fair Labor Standards Act do not apply. Non-exempt employees are paid for every hour, with time and a half past 40 hours a week. Neither status covers the bowling night. That exemption gets claimed separately, by the person standing by the door with their coat still on.
