Six years on this street, and two neighbors could pick me out of a lineup, both from Tuesday nights. The bin goes out at 9:58, at a steady pace that says nothing is wrong. Somebody's doorbell camera caught it once. The clip is blurry, and it went around the block's group chat with three question marks. I wave from behind the blinds. Packages come in after dark. On Halloween the porch light stays off and a bowl of king-size candy bars sits on the step, which only made the rumors worse. A funny cryptid shirt for the antisocial homebody who counts the trash run as a public appearance. Sightings remain unconfirmed. The recycling is the only proof anyone lives here.

THE FINE PRINT

NEIGHBORHOOD arches over the top and CRYPTID runs straight along the bottom in rounded dark brown capitals with a thin inline. Between them a shaggy brown cryptid in a golden-yellow bathrobe and slippers strides to the right, a knotted garbage bag in one hand, glancing back over its shoulder. Three small golden-yellow stars sit in the open space around it.

ASKING FOR A FRIEND

What does local cryptid mean?

It is internet slang for a person the community rarely sees, and then only briefly, so every sighting gets retold like folklore: the jogger who only exists at 5 a.m., the neighbor known mainly by a car that leaves at 6:10. The word borrows from cryptids, creatures people swear exist that nobody has proven. Most streets hold the house with the drawn curtains to the same standard of evidence.

How early can you put your trash out?

It depends on your city, hauler or HOA, but a common rule allows bins at the curb from the evening before pickup, often after 5 or 6 p.m., and wants them pulled in by the night of collection day. Some places fine early birds, so check the local code. Anyone avoiding small talk aims for the last legal minute, when every other porch is empty.

Do I have to talk to my neighbors?

No. No law or lease requires it, and plenty of good neighbors never get past a nod. A short conversation helps when something is shared, like a fence line, a tree or a dog that barks at 3 a.m. Past that, a wave from the driveway counts as neighborly, and so does a wave through the window if they happened to see it.
