The family first-aid kit was a bag of frozen peas and a parent yelling from the kitchen window. Sprained ankles, bee stings and one bike wreck into the neighbor's mailbox all got the same treatment: walk it off. Generation X grew up without bike helmets, wore the house key on a shoelace and came home when the streetlights came on. Nobody saw a doctor unless a bone was showing. Most of it healed. Some of it healed a little crooked and now forecasts rain better than the local news. A funny Gen X shirt for the latchkey kid who still says 'I'm fine' while limping to the car.

THE FINE PRINT

GEN X in huge black slab-serif capitals over three horizontal stripes, orange, red and orange, that run out past both sides. WE WALKED IT OFF sits underneath in the same heavy capitals, as wide as the stripes. Every letter and stripe is cracked and specked for a worn-in vintage look.

ASKING FOR A FRIEND

Does walking it off actually help?

Sometimes. For a muscle cramp or a minor bump, gentle walking keeps blood moving and stops stiffness setting in, and current advice for a mild sprain favors early, easy movement after a day or two of rest. It does nothing for a broken bone, a deep cut or a head injury, which need a doctor. A whole generation learned which was which by trial and error.

Why are Gen X so resilient?

The usual explanation is the childhood: many Gen Xers were latchkey kids with two working parents or divorced ones, little supervision and long unstructured afternoons, so they learned to solve problems, and patch up scrapes, on their own. Growing up as a small generation between two huge ones also meant getting overlooked and getting on with it. The rest was stubbornness.

What was childhood like in the 1980s?

Looser than now, by most accounts: kids biked across town without helmets, rode in the back of the station wagon often without seat belts, and spent whole Saturdays out of reach of any adult. The family phone hung on the kitchen wall with a long, tangled cord. Scraped knees got a garden hose and a bandage, if that.
