How many crows does it take to make a murder?
There is no official number. 'A murder of crows' is a collective noun recorded in the late 1400s, chosen for its sound and the birds' grim reputation, not for a headcount. In practice people use it for any group. Two is technically a group, which is generous.
Why do birds sit on power lines?
Wires give birds a clear view of food and predators, a sunny perch and nothing overhead. They are not shocked because they touch only one wire, so no current runs through them. Crows use them as meeting points too, on the days everyone shows up.
What is a group of ravens called?
An unkindness, or sometimes a conspiracy. Both names come from the same old tradition of collective nouns that gave crows a murder. Ravens are larger than crows and are usually seen in pairs, so the full conspiracy rarely assembles either.
