By 9:04 a man has asked to speak to my manager, and my manager is on hold with him too. Today I have restarted a stranger's router over the phone eleven times, read the store hours aloud to a man standing under the sign that lists them, and apologized for the weather. The smile came with the job; nobody said it had to reach the eyes. Every call ends with me asking if there is anything else I can do, and I mean it exactly as much as the training video does. A funny customer service shirt for the retail, help desk and call center crowd, worn on the drive home with the radio off. Survey score: four stars, pending review.

THE FINE PRINT

UNHAPPY in huge, heavy slab-serif capitals, with TO HELP centered underneath in tall, bold condensed capitals and a horizontal rule on either side.
